The Battle of Walong stands as a poignant chapter in India’s military history, a testament to the unmatched bravery, dedication and indomitable spirit of the Indian Army. Set against the backdrop of the 1962 Sino-Indian War, this fierce battle unfolded in the unforgiving terrain of Kibithu, Namti Tri Junction (famously known as Tiger’s Mouth), Walong and adjoining features in the Easternmost parts of Arunachal Pradesh, where the Indian Army’s resolve was put to the ultimate test.

In October 1962, as Chinese forces advanced aggressively into Indian territory, the responsibility of defending the strategically crucial Walong sector fell upon the gallant 11th Infantry Brigade of the Indian Army’s esteemed 2nd Infantry Division. This brigade, comprising the battle-hardened units of 6 KUMAON, 4 SIKH and 3/3 Gorkha Rifles, was tasked with holding their ground against an adversary that was not only numerically superior but also better equipped and entrenched in advantageous positions.

From the outset, the Indian soldiers faced daunting challenges, including extreme weather conditions, treacherous mountainous terrain and severe shortages of supplies and ammunition. Despite these overwhelming odds, the Indian troops displayed unparalleled valour and fortitude in safeguarding their motherland. The soldiers of the 6 Kumaon Regiment, renowned for their fierce fighting spirit, engaged in relentless hand-to-hand combat, holding their positions with remarkable tenacity at Kibithu and Tri Junction. The 4 Sikh Regiment (Saragarhi Battalion) at Namti (famously known as Tiger’s Mouth) and Ladders, embodying the highest traditions of their illustrious past, fought fiercely, often outnumbered but never outmatched in courage. The brave warriors of the 3/3 and 2/8 Gorkha Rifles, with their famed khukris in hand, exemplified indomitable grit and raw combat prowess, making the enemy pay dearly for every inch of ground. Our tactically sited posts failed numerous attacks launched by the adversary thereby causing heavy casualties on enemy.

Throughout the intense battle, the Indian units demonstrated exceptional tactical acumen and sheer resilience. They launched several counterattacks to disrupt the advancing Chinese forces, inflicting significant casualties and proving that their spirit could not be broken. Despite the scarcity of logistic support and the insurmountable odds, the Indian Army’s resolve remained unshaken, as they valiantly fought till the last man and the last bullet.

The Battle of Walong, became a defining moment of heroism and sacrifice. The valiant stand of the 11th Infantry Brigade delayed the Chinese advance, providing a critical morale boost to the nation and demonstrating the unyielding courage of the Indian soldier. It was a battle where the spirit of duty, honour and sacrifice shone brightly, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire the Indian Army to this day.

Battle of Walong is not just a story of conflict but a narrative of gallantry that echoes through time, honouring those who laid down their lives in the defence of our nation. The bravery displayed by the Indian Army units involved is a powerful reminder of the Army’s unwavering commitment to protecting the nation’s sovereignty, embodying the finest traditions of the Indian military ethos.
