Pahalgam, Feb 18 (JKNS): The Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA) has imposed a complete ban on the use and carrying of polythene and other non-biodegradable plastic items within its jurisdiction, declaring all tourist hotspots and public areas as polythene-free zones with immediate effect.

According to Order No. 2A PDA of 2026 dated February 10, 2026, issued by Chief Executive Officer PDA Pahalgam as per news agency JKNS, Mir Nasrool Hilal Jeri (JKAS), the decision has been taken in view of widespread littering of rivers, forest areas, parks, market places and residential zones by plastic waste such as water bottles, chips packets, plastic bags, canned drinks and plastic crockery.

The order states that such waste poses serious environmental hazards and risks to human and animal life, particularly in the ecologically fragile region of Pahalgam. It further emphasizes the need to promote eco-friendly tourism and prevent the devastating impact of non-biodegradable substances on the environment.

Under the new directive, carrying and use of plastic bags, chips covers, plastic bottles, canned drinks, plastic crockery and other similar items has been strictly prohibited at all tourist spots, parks, streams, forest areas, residential and commercial establishments, religious places and along the Yatra routes falling under PDA jurisdiction.

Authorities have warned that any violation of the order will be dealt with strictly as per rules. Continuous violations may also lead to cancellation of registration certificates issued by the J&K Tourism Department. Additionally, a fine of ₹2,000 will be imposed on anyone found littering or dumping banned plastic and other non-biodegradable items in the notified areas.

The order has come into immediate effect, officials said. (JKNS)
