Budgam, May 31 (JKNS): In a region often shadowed by conflict, a Muslim man from Budgam has become a quiet yet profound symbol of Kashmir’s syncretic tradition by tending to a Hindu temple for decades.

Gulzar Hussain, a resident of the central Kashmir district, has been looking after the historic Dia-Nag Shiv Temple with steadfast devotion. For years, he has ensured the temple remains clean, lamps are lit daily, and the sanctity of the shrine is preserved especially for the Kashmiri Pandit community who once lived nearby in large numbers.

“Every day, after offering namaz at the mosque, I come here to clean the temple and light a diya,” Gulzar told news agency JKNS. “Even if our Pandit brothers visit only occasionally, I want them to feel welcomed and blessed.”

Gulzar’s dedication has earned him wide respect across communities. Locals and Kashmiri Pandits alike have praised his efforts as a rare and moving act of communal harmony in a region too often divided along religious lines.

“I am very happy to take care of the Dia-Nag Shiv Temple. This is not about religion it is about faith, respect, and humanity,” Gulzar said. “I was raised among Pandit neighbours. I miss the days when they were here. We lived like one family.”

His selfless commitment reflects the essence of Kashmiriyat a cultural ethos rooted in coexistence, compassion, and shared identity.

Even in the absence of frequent temple-goers, Gulzar has never stopped performing his daily rituals. “This place must always be ready for them,” he said with humility.

At a time when stories of division dominate the discourse, Gulzar Hussain stands as a poignant reminder that the spirit of brotherhood in Kashmir still endures quietly, resiliently, and with deep dignity. (JKNS)
