Beijing/New Delhi: China has expressed the hope that India and Pakistan will consolidate and maintain the momentum of the ceasefire, and avoid renewed conflict. Beijing has also offered its good offices to mediate between both nations to achieve a lasting ceasefire.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, asked to comment on the ceasefire reached between India and Pakistan, said that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi had spoken separately on Monday night with Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

The spokesperson said that “China believes that a ceasefire between India and Pakistan serves the fundamental and long-term interests of both countries, contributes to regional peace and stability, and reflects the shared expectations of the international community.

“He added that China welcomes and supports this development.

“Lin said that India and Pakistan are neighbours that cannot be moved and are both neighbouring countries of China.

“Since tensions between India and Pakistan began, China has maintained close communication with all relevant parties, calling on both sides to remain calm and exercise restraint to avoid further escalation.

Lin said that on Saturday night, after both sides agreed to a ceasefire, Wang in his phone calls with NSA Doval and Pakistani FM Ishaq Dar, “pushed for de-escalation and the realisation of a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire. Both sides, he added, responded positively.”

“Lin noted that China hopes India and Pakistan will consolidate and maintain the momentum of the ceasefire, avoid renewed conflict, and resolve differences through dialogue and negotiation, returning to the path of political settlement.

“China stands ready to maintain communication with both sides and continue to play a constructive role in achieving a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire and safeguarding regional peace and stability,” said Lin.
