Baramulla: Labour Department Baramulla on Thursday organized a special programme to commemorate ‘International Labour Day’, recognizing the invaluable contributions of the working class and raising awareness about their rights and welfare.
On the occasion, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, inaugurated a medical and grievance redressal camp organized for labourers. The camp offered free medical check-ups and consultations, along with a dedicated grievance redressal cell where labourers directly interacted with officials to seek resolution of their issues related to welfare benefits and labour rights.
In his address, DC praised the hard work and resilience of the labour community, stating that they form the backbone of society. He informed that during the last financial year, the district administration disbursed approximately Rs.18 crore as financial assistance to registered labourers under various government welfare schemes, reflecting a strong commitment to their well-being.
Highlighting the importance of financial security for the working class, Minga Sherpa urged labourers to come forward and avail benefits under the National Mission for Financial Inclusion, which aims to provide universal access to essential financial services.
He specifically encouraged enrolment in two key insurance schemes—Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), which offers life insurance coverage at a nominal premium, and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), which provides accidental death and disability cover at a very low cost. He said these schemes are crucial in safeguarding the future of labourers and their families and called for greater awareness and participation at the grassroots level.
Earlier, Assistant Labour Commissioner Baramulla, Rahil Amin, highlighted the significance of the day. He also briefed the gathering about various welfare schemes being implemented by the Labour Department to ensure the socio-economic upliftment of the working class.
Later, DC distributed certificates among workers as a token of appreciation for their service and to encourage continued engagement with various government initiatives.
The event concluded with the distribution of informative materials and on-the-spot facilitation for registration under various welfare schemes.
