As part of the Mehmooda Ali Shah Interdisciplinary Lecture Series, Department of English, Govt. College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar organised a guest lecture on the theme ‘Fashioning the Self: Aims of Education in the Age of AI’ by Prof. Mufti Mudasir Farooqi.
Prof. Mudasir focused on how in the age of artificial intelligence, education must go beyond equipping students with technical skills, and focus on fashioning the self. He emphasised that education must become a space for meaning-making, self reflection, preparing learners not just to adapt to AI, but to shape the future with integrity and empathy.
Prof. Mudasir, who is a Professor at the Department of English, University of Kashmir, also talked about the dual dangers of erosion of depth that ultimately leads to loss of self and domination of totalitarianism threatening the present generation.
Referring to various philosophers like Alvin Toffler and Aldous Huxley whose works explore the rapid technological disorientation of the present age, he mentioned how Allama Iqbal’s concept of the ‘Self’ (Khudi) is highly relevant to the present age, especially in the context of identity and self realization.
Earlier, welcoming the guest, Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Yasmeen Farooq emphasised on the importance of contemplation in the present age of distraction especially in the field of education. She highlighted the significance of such lectures for the holistic development of students.
