Srinagar: PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, accusing him of aligning with a divisive agenda by warmly welcoming Union Minister Kiran Rijiju just days after the Waqf Amendment Bill was passed through Parliament.

In a post on X, as per news agency JKNS, Mehbooba wrote: “After bulldozing the Waqf Amendment Bill through Parliament, Minister Kiran Rijiju strategically chose to visit Kashmir. He was given a red carpet welcome by the Chief Minister of India’s only Muslim-majority state—a move designed and deliberate to signal to the 24 crore Muslims across India that their views hold little weight.”

She said the CM’s public show of support lent “legitimacy” to a deeply controversial move that has triggered unease among Muslims. “The visit, set against the backdrop of Asia’s largest tulip garden, felt like a celebration of the community’s marginalisation and disempowerment,” she added.

Mehbooba said the CM’s conduct had “deepened the sense of alienation and helplessness” in the region and stood in contrast to his responsibility to protect the sentiments of his people.

“With today possibly marking the end of this Assembly session, the ruling alliance should stop prolonging the political drama and move a resolution rejecting the Waqf Bill,” she demanded. (JKNS)
