MHA Declares J&K Ittihadul Muslimeen as ‘Unlawful Association’ Under UAPA

Indian paramedics after screening take down the names of Muslims wearing face masks before they are being to a bus that will take them to a quarantine facility, amid concerns over the spread of the new coronavirus at the Nizamuddin area of New Delhi, India, Tuesday, March 31, 2020. Police has cordoned off the area after several people who attended an Islamic congregation earlier this month here tested positive for Covid-19. The new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms for most people, but for some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness or death. Srinagar: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has declared the Jammu and Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM), led by Masroor Abbas Ansari, as an unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967, for a period of five years.

As per a notification issued by the MHA, a copy of which lies with news agency JKNS, the government stated that JKIM has been engaging in unlawful activities, posing a threat to India’s integrity, sovereignty, and security.

The organization has been accused of supporting terrorist activities, spreading anti-India propaganda, and mobilizing funds for separatist movements in Jammu and Kashmir, it reads.

JKIM members have shown disregard for India’s constitutional authority and have been involved in activities destabilizing law and order, inciting unrest, and promoting the use of arms for separatist agendas, notification reads.

The government asserted that failing to curb these activities would allow JKIM to continue advocating for J&K’s secession, propagating false narratives, and disrupting public order.

Invoking Section 3(1) of the UAPA, the Central Government declared JKIM as an unlawful association with immediate effect.

The notification specifies that this decision will remain in force for five years, subject to any order under Section 4 of the UAPA. (JKNS)
