Jammu,:- Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan is set to arrive in Jammu today to chair a crucial security review meeting with top police and security officials of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to sources that the meeting will be attended by senior officials from police, paramilitary forces, intelligence agencies, and central security forces.
This marks Mohan’s second security review in J&K since assuming office, with his first meeting held in Srinagar in December last year. His visit follows the tragic discovery of three civilian bodies in the Bani-Billawar area of Kathua, which were recovered from a water channel after the victims had gone missing for over 60 hours.
The deceased, identified as Yogesh (32), Darshan (40), and Varun (14), were reportedly relatives attending a wedding before their disappearance.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh confirmed terrorist involvement in their killings, calling the act “extremely sad and a matter of deep concern.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Dr. Singh stated:
“The brutal killing of three youths by terrorists in Kathua’s Bani area is deeply saddening and raises serious concerns. There seems to be a conspiracy to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of the region. We have discussed the matter with concerned officials, and the Union Home Secretary himself is reaching Jammu to assess the situation firsthand. I am confident that necessary steps will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future and to maintain public confidence.”
According to sources, the meeting will take place at the Jammu Convention Centre in two sessions. Senior officials expected to participate include Atal Dulloo, J&K Chief Secretary, Chandrakar Bharti, J&K Home Secretary, Nalin Prabhat, Director General of Police (DGP)
Nitish Kumar, Additional DG, CID Bhim Sen Tuti, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu
V.K. Birdi, IGP Kashmir
Senior officers from the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Additionally, Superintendents of Police from all 20 districts of J&K are expected to attend one of the sessions.
The primary agenda of the meeting will be reviewing the overall security situation in J&K, with a specific focus on eradicating terrorism from the Jammu division.
The Government of India (GOI) is particularly concerned about terrorist presence in the higher reaches of Kathua, Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, Reasi, Rajouri, and Poonch, where reportedly foreign national terrorists continue to operate despite harsh winter conditions.
Sources indicate that a new joint strategy involving the Army, paramilitary forces, and J&K Police will be devised to neutralize these terrorist groups. Although the exact number of militants remains unclear, intelligence suggests they move in small groups of three to four.
The security review follows three high-level meetings on J&K’s security led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in February, along with two security meetings chaired by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in Srinagar and Jammu last month.
The outcome of today’s security discussions is expected to shape future counterterrorism operations in the region.—(JKNS)
