Srinagar: The Department of Students’ Welfare (DSW), University of Kashmir, in collaboration with the Range Police Headquarters, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir Police, organized a speech competition on the theme “Breaking the Chains of Addiction: Empowering Youth and Communities for a Nasha Mukt Bharat” at the University of Kashmir.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 30 students representing various colleges and university teaching departments. The competition aimed to create awareness about the devastating impact of substance abuse and underscore the role of youth in promoting a drug-free society.
The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Nilofer Khan, graced the prize distribution ceremony as the Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering, she lauded the initiative and emphasized the university’s commitment to empowering youth to lead the fight against drug abuse. “The strength of a society lies in the hands of its young generation. A Nasha Mukt Bharat is not just a vision but a necessity, and it is the responsibility of every individual, especially the youth, to work collectively towards this goal. The University of Kashmir remains dedicated to promoting awareness and guiding students towards a healthier and more purposeful life,” the Vice Chancellor said.
The event was also graced by Rajiv Omprakash Pandey, DIG, Central Kashmir Range, who attended as the Guest of Honour. Speaking on the occasion, he emphasized the critical role of law enforcement in curbing drug abuse and encouraged youth to take a stand against this menace. “Substance abuse is not just a personal struggle but a societal crisis. We must work together—educational institutions, law enforcement, and communities—to safeguard the future of our younger generations.”
Other distinguished guests included Mr. Liyaqat Ali, Staff Officer to DIG (CKR), and Mr. Hilal Khaliq Bhat, SP Hazratbal, who reiterated the importance of community awareness in tackling substance abuse.
Earlier, during the inauguration of the event, SSP Srinagar, Mr. Imtiyaz Hussain, commended the efforts of the University of Kashmir and the J&K Police in organizing such meaningful initiatives. “Education and awareness are the strongest weapons in the fight against drug addiction. It is inspiring to see students actively engaging in discussions that can shape a better future for society.”
Prof. Pervez Ahmed, Dean Students’ Welfare, welcomed the dignitaries and participants, highlighting the importance of youth-led initiatives in eradicating drug abuse. Speaking on the occasion, he said, “The battle against substance abuse requires collective efforts. Events like these empower students to become ambassadors of change within their communities.”
The event was coordinated by Dr. Shahid Ali Khan, Cultural Officer, University of Kashmir, who also conducted the proceedings and proposed the vote of thanks. Emphasizing the role of youth, he stated, “The youth is the heartbeat of any society, and we have the responsibility to be torchbearers, rebuilding our communities and working towards a Nasha Mukt Bharat.”
The event provided a platform for young minds to voice their thoughts and perspectives on combating drug addiction, promoting a collective commitment toward a healthier and addiction-free society.
After a highly competitive session, adjudicated by Mr. Ajaz Ul Haque, Mr. Hakeem Yasir Abbas , and Mr. Shahkar Mehraj Wani, Ms.Nuha Haris from SSM College of Engineering secured the first position, followed by Farhan from the Department of Computer Science, KU, in second place. Baraha Malik from the Law Department, KU, claimed third place, while Arbeena from IITM, Hyderpora, and Rawhaan Rafeeq from GDC Baramulla secured the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
