SRINAGAR: A sobering seminar on drug addiction concluded today with calls for a more comprehensive and collaborative approach to tackling the growing problem. Experts from law enforcement, legal experts, NGO’s, civil society and drug rehabilitation centers highlighted the complex nature of addiction and the need for solutions that go beyond simply punishing users.
The seminar, titled “Say ‘no’ to drugs, ‘Yes’ to life,” drew a diverse audience of social workers, healthcare professionals, and community members. Speakers emphasized the devastating impact of drug addiction, not only on individuals but also on families and society as a whole.
“We are seeing a worrying trend of younger individuals falling prey to addiction,” stated Mr. Nisar Bakshi, Dysp. Anti-Narcotics Department. “While enforcement remains crucial in curbing the supply of drugs, we must also focus on prevention and rehabilitation. Arresting addicts without offering them support simply perpetuates the cycle.”
This sentiment was echoed by Sajad Mir, legal expert specializing in drug-related cases. “The current legal framework, while necessary, often focuses on punitive measures,” he explained. “We need to consider alternative sentencing options that prioritize treatment and rehabilitation over incarceration, especially for first-time offenders. Jailing someone with an addiction without addressing the underlying issues is often counterproductive.”
Dr. Tauseef Bhat, Social Worker and Environmentalist, stressed the importance of understanding the root causes of addiction. “Addiction is a complex disease often linked to underlying mental health issues, trauma, or social factors,” he explained. “A holistic approach is essential, one that addresses both the physical and psychological aspects of addiction. This includes providing access to therapy, counseling, and aftercare support to prevent relapse.”
The seminar also highlighted the need for greater public awareness campaigns to educate individuals about the dangers of drug use and to destigmatize addiction. “We need to create a safe space for people to talk about addiction without fear of judgment,” urged Dr. Mohammad Muzzafar, Director, Drug de-addiction Centre Kashmir. “Stigma prevents many individuals from seeking help, which can have tragic consequences.”
Participants at the seminar agreed that tackling drug addiction requires a multi-pronged approach involving law enforcement, healthcare providers, educators, and families. The consensus was that a collaborative effort, focusing on prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, is crucial to effectively address this complex societal challenge and offer hope for recovery to those struggling with addiction. The seminar concluded with a call for increased funding and resources for drug rehabilitation programs and a commitment to continued dialogue and collaboration on this critical issue.
