Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Wednesday met National Conference (NC) firebrand MP Ruhullah Mehdi in New Delhi.
Mirwaiz, who is also head of the Mutahida Majlis-E-Ulema (MMU), a conglomerate of several religious groups in Jammu and Kashmir, is in Delhi since he met the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Waqf Bill on January 24.
Sources said that the National Conference MP Mehdi who was in Delhi to attend Parliament’s upcoming Budget session beginning January 31, made a courtesy call to Mirwaiz.
“The two discussed the Waqf Bill and current situation in Jammu and Kashmir,” they said.
Mirwaiz confirmed to UNI his meeting with MP Mehdi.
While Mirwaiz has been known for his moderate stance, consistently advocating peaceful means to resolve the Kashmir issue, the young NC Mehdi has taken a firm position against the central government over the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
Observers note that this meeting signifies a notable shift, as separatist leaders have largely maintained a distance from mainstream political figures over the past three decades.
