Srinagar Police Arrests Fraudster Impersonating Govt Official, Promising Drug Peddler’s Release for Bribe

Srinagar: Srinagar Police has arrested a man for impersonating a government officer Promising Drug Peddler’s Release for Bribe.

In a statement issued here to news agency JKNS, police said that on 06/01/2025, a complaint was lodged by Ms. Safiya Riyaz, wife of Riyaz Ahmad Channa, against Sadiq Hassan Chaloo, a resident of Shaheedgunj. The accused allegedly claimed influence as a government official and demanded money to facilitate the release of her husband, arrested on 19/11/2024 by Rajbagh Police in a narcotics case.

The complainant stated that the accused initially returned a partial amount after she discovered the fraud but denied the rest. Based on her complaint, a case under Sections 318(4), 319, and 351(2) of the BNS Act was registered, and the accused has been arrested, it reads.

Police confirmed that her husband, Riyaz Ahmad Channa, is currently lodged in Sub Jail Baderwah under the PIT NDPS Act.

Authorities have urged the public not to fall prey to individuals claiming influence with law enforcement and to report such incidents immediately to the nearest police station or dial 112. The investigation is ongoing, reads the statement. (JKNS)
