Kashmir braces for third spell of snow

Srinagar: Kashmir is bracing for a third spell of snowfall even as foggy weather conditions affected the morning flights at Srinagar International Airport on Saturday.

Officials at the Srinagar Airport said that due to poor visibility, all airlines rescheduled their morning operations after 10 AM. With the improvement in visibility, the operations at the Airport resumed and the morning’s first flight landed at 11:13 AM.

On Friday some flights were also delayed at the Airport due to poor visibility.

The Meteorological Department’s Srinagar office said there is the possibility of moderate to heavy snow at isolated higher reaches from Saturday night till Monday morning.

As per the forecast, the Kashmir region is expected to witness snowfall on January 4 night.

“The peak activity is likely from the night of the 4th to the late night of the 5th or early morning of the 6th, with improvement expected by the afternoon of Monday,” MeT in Srinagar said.

According to the weather department , heavy snow over middle and higher reaches of Kashmir and Chenab valley can occur from the night of January 4 up to Monday morning.

The MeT advisory said there is a possibility of temporary disruption of surface and air transportation particularly on Sunday. The tourists and travelers have been advised to plan accordingly and follow the advisories.

Owing to the forecast of snowfall, the administration in several districts of Kashmir has issued advisories for the public asking them to follow safety guidelines and avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions.

The weather is likely to improve from Monday afternoon

MeT said another wet spell can be expected between Jan 11-12 with cloudy weather and light snowfall at isolated to scattered places.

Kashmir witnessed the first spell of snow on December 27 and the second spell on January 2.

Meanwhile, the minimum temperature in the Kashmir Valley continued to remain sub-zero.

As per MeT, Srinagar recorded minus 1.6°C, Qazigund minus 6.6°C, Pahalgam minus

5.9°C, Kupwara minus 2.2°C, Kokernag minus 5.8°C and Gulmarg minus 2.2°C.
