Soon after the fire broke out the local people of the area rushed to the spot to conduct a rescue operation but were unable to save the children in time, an eyewitness said.

The incident came to light when the mother of the deceased children had gone to the market leaving them alone in the house, they said.

The cause of the fire is stated to be under investigation.
