Technological Advancement in the Valley of Kashmir in Last 10 years

Over the past decade, the Kashmir Valley has experienced significant technological advancements across various sectors, contributing to its socio-economic development and integration with national and global economies. This article explores key areas where technology has played a transformative role in the region. The Government of India has implemented several initiatives to enhance infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, with a focus on technological integration Power Projects: In the past two years, power projects with a combined capacity of about 3,000 MW have been revived, with progress on track to meet energy demands and support technological growth. The construction of 17,601 km of roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna has been completed, connecting 2,074 places. Notably, the New Banihal tunnel and Chenani Nashri Tunnel have been opened to traffic, improving connectivity. Additionally, international flights from Srinagar to Sharjah commenced on October 23, 2021, and night flights from Jammu and Srinagar have been introduced, enhancing global and domestic connectivity.

The establishment of premier institutions has bolstered the educational landscape
Higher Education Institutions like the Indian Institute of Technology Jammu and the Indian Institute of Management Jammu have become operational, offering advanced courses in technology and management. The number of government degree and engineering colleges has increased from 96 to 147, expanding access to higher education. Medical Education The region has seen the establishment of two new AIIMS, seven new medical colleges, two state cancer institutes, and 15 nursing colleges, significantly enhancing medical education and healthcare services. This expansion has added 854 seats, including 600 MBBS and 50 postgraduate courses.

Industrial Development Scheme A new central sector scheme with an outlay of ₹28,400 crores has been introduced for the industrial development of Jammu and Kashmir. The region has received investment applications exceeding ₹54,000 crores, with projects worth more than ₹36,000 crores allotted industrial land, indicating robust industrial growth. Biotechnology Parks The government has initiated the establishment of two industrial biotech parks, one at Ghatti, Kathua, and another at Handwara, Kupwara. These parks aim to provide a platform for industrialists, researchers, and entrepreneurs to collaborate in areas like agriculture biotechnology, healthcare, and nutraceuticals, fostering innovation and employment opportunities. ​

Technological interventions have modernized traditional practices, High-Density Plantation Scheme Originally focused on apples, the scheme has expanded to include crops like mango, litchi, cherry, and walnut. This initiative aims to increase productivity and profitability for farmers. Notably, Kashmiri saffron has been granted the Geographical Indication tag, enhancing its market value. Aroma Mission the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research has undertaken projects like the Aroma Mission to bring wasteland under the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants. This initiative is expected to generate significant revenue and provide employment opportunities in the region.

Advancements in healthcare technology have improved medical services
Genetic Counseling and Research Centers Established at the University of Jammu and Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, these centers focus on the detection and counseling of patients with genetic disorders, utilizing advanced medical technologies for better healthcare outcomes.

The region has witnessed a digital transformation
Internet and Mobile Services Despite challenges, there has been a concerted effort to enhance digital connectivity. The expansion of internet and mobile services has facilitated better communication, access to information, and e-governance, contributing to transparency and efficiency in administration. Media and Information Dissemination Technological advancements have influenced news dissemination in Kashmir. The launch of various news web portals and the growing prominence of social media platforms like Facebook have transformed how news is shared and consumed, especially during significant events.

Focused efforts have been made to promote scientific research and innovation
Jammu & Kashmir Science, Technology & Innovation Council Established to harness the potential of science and technology as instruments of socio-economic change, the council runs various programs, including funding research projects, conducting science congresses, and promoting scientific talent among youth.

Technological tools have been employed to enhance security
Surveillance Systems The implementation of advanced surveillance technologies, including round-the-clock checkpoints at strategic points and intensified cordon and search operations, has been crucial in maintaining law and order in the region.
While significant progress has been made, challenges remain
Internet Shutdowns The region has experienced internet shutdowns, impacting communication and access to information. Balancing security concerns with the need for digital connectivity remains a critical issue.
