Beirut, Dec 16 (UNI) Explosions continue in Syria’s Tartus province after Israeli military strikes hit the strategic weapon depot early on Monday, Lebanese news agency Al Mayadeen reported.
The strike on Tartus has been described as the heaviest and the most violent attacks on Syria since the onset of Israeli operation, targeting air defense units and surface-to-surface missile depots, the news agency said, adding that the explosions were so intensive that they felt like an earthquake. Several civilians were reportedly killed and injured.
On December 9, the Israeli air force carried out large-scale bombardments of air force bases, research centers and defense industry facilities in different provinces of Syria. Israel Defense Forces’ spokesman Avichay Adraee told Sputnik that Israel had decided to destroy Syria’s military capabilities to prevent them from falling into the hands of radical formations.
Syria’s armed opposition captured the Syrian capital of Damascus on December 8. Mohammed al-Bashir, who ran an Idlib-based administration formed by opposition groups, was named interim prime minister on December 10, after Bashar Assad stepped down as president and left the country.
