Srinagar: To commemorate World Disability Day, the Artillery Directorate of the Indian Army organised, on 7th Dec, its inaugural event to honour specially abled veterans of the Gunners fraternity who have lost a limb or suffered disabilities in the line of duty. The event marked a unique initiative bringing together various NGOs from the disability support sector and Indian Army directorates, facilitating a collaboration between government and non-government agencies to support veterans.

The event aimed to address current challenges faced by specially abled veterans and provide solutions for their future concerns. In attendance were prominent NGOs from both the armed forces and civil disability sectors, including Disabled War Veterans (India) Association (DIWAVE), War Wounded Federation (WWF), Indian Ex Servicemen League (IESL), Volunteers for Blind, Action for Ability Development and Inclusion (AADI), National Centre for Promotion of Employment of Disabled People, Mariwala Health Initiative, and National Association for the Deaf.

These NGOs empowered the veterans by sharing valuable information, networking opportunities, and insights into the latest policies and schemes available for them. The Directorate General of Resettlement, Directorate of Indian Army Veterans, and Artillery Records also contributed to the event.

The event was conducted in two phases. In the first phase, the heads of various NGOs addressed the disabled veterans on a range of topics. A total of 55 disabled veterans benefited from the initiative. As part of the support, automated wheelchairs, electric scooters, and monetary assistance were provided to veterans based on their individual requirements.

Lieutenant General Adosh Kumar, Director General of Artillery, addressed the gathering, reaffirming the Army’s unwavering support to the veterans. In his talk, he emphasised the importance of recognising the challenges associated with disability and underscored the need to help veterans reintegrate into society.

The second phase of the event featured discussions among representatives from the Artillery Directorate and the heads of various NGOs, focusing on different aspects related to disability in the armed forces. Lieutenant General Adosh Kumar confirmed that this event would be held annually across India, highlighting the commitment to continuously support and uplift the specially abled veterans.

This maiden event marks a significant step in reinforcing the Indian Army’s dedication to the welfare of its veterans and ensuring they receive the care and respect they deserve.
