Cold wave tightens noose over Kashmir as Srinagar records coldest night

Srinagar: The cold wave has tightened its grip over the Kashmir Valley, with Srinagar recording the season’s coldest night at minus 2.1°C, while Shopian and Pahalgam emerged as the coldest locations at minus 5.5°C and -5.0°C, respectively, on Thursday, officials said.

According to the Meteorological Centre, Srinagar experienced its coldest night of the season, as temperatures during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday dropped to -2.1°C, compared to -0.6°C the previous night. This was 1.7°C below the average for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this time of the season.

The tourist spot of Pahalgam plunged to minus 5.0°C on Thursday against the minus 4.4°C recorded on the previous night. This was 2.2°C below normal for the famous tourist destination in south Kashmir.

Shopian, also located in south Kashmir, remained the coldest place at minus 5.5°C. Other recorded temperatures included minus 5.1°C in Anantnag, minus 4.5°C in Konibal, minus 4.8°C in Pulwama, and minus 4.0°C in Kulgam. Sonamarg, in the Ganderbal district, recorded a minimum of minus 3.4°C.

Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 3.0°C against the minus 2.4°C, and it was 2.3°C below normal for this time of the year.

The minimum temperature at the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district improved by a notch and was recorded at minus 2.5°C against the minus 2.6°C recorded the previous night. It was 0.3°C above normal for the valley of meadows during this period of the season.

Kokernag dipped to sub-zero and recorded a low of 0.2°C against the 0.4°C previous night, and it was 0.3°C above normal for the picnic spot of South Kashmir.

Kupwara had a low of minus 2.3°C against the minus 1.9°C recorded a day ago, and it was 1.3°C below normal for the frontier district of North Kashmir during this period of the season.

The MeT office said the weather will generally remain dry during the next 24 hours, and from the late night of November 29/30, there is a possibility of light rain and light snow over the higher reaches and at isolated places of the Kashmir Valley.

It said on December 1 there is a possibility of light rain and light snow over the higher reaches and at isolated places, while during December 2 and 3 another spell of light rain and light snow over the higher reaches and at scattered places could occur in the valley. The weather will generally remain dry till December 6.

Light rain and light snow over the higher reaches and at isolated places is also possible during December 7 and 8 in Jammu and Kashmir, the MeT office said.
