Established as part of Operation Sadbhavana in April 2010 at Drugmulla Tehsil, Kupwara, under the auspices of the Northern Command of the Indian Army, Udaan School addresses the needs of a marginalised segment of society. With Kupwara District home to over 39,000 differently-abled individuals, the school serves as a beacon of hope, providing education and rehabilitation to those often overlooked by society. Currently attended by 20 students, Udaan School is the sole institution of its kind in the entire North Kashmir valley.
The school is dedicated to providing specialised training to help students cope with daily activities and enhance their physical and mental abilities. Its informal layout, resembling a home rather than an institution, creates a warm and comfortable atmosphere conducive to learning. Facilities such as the lab for teaching daily living activities and the Physiotherapy Lab equipped with physiotherapy equipment, Braille machines, and audio meters aim to empower students with various disabilities. Furthermore, Udaan School organises counselling sessions for parents and recreational activities for students, and it celebrates national and religious festivals, fostering a nurturing environment.
The local population and civil administration have widely applauded the efforts of the Indian Army in establishing and expanding the Udaan School. The school is now registered as a society under the Jammu and Kashmir Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Act 1998, with plans to collaborate with an NGO to upgrade infrastructure and provide qualified trainers. Additionally, referral facilities to hospitals and doctors specialising in various disabilities will be ensured, with the involvement of local government authorities for support and financial assistance. Udaan School is a testament to the Army’s commitment to Operation Sadbhavana, which aims to bring joy and support to the parents of special children in remote districts like Kupwara.
