On The 21st of July, 2024,Tthe Kashmir Writers Association (KWA) Unit Baramulla held a significant and enriching day-long interaction with the tribal communities of Butapathri, Gulmarg. The theme of the event, “Tribal Life and Cultural Perseverance,” aimed to explore and celebrate the unique lifestyle, traditions, and cultural heritage of the tribal people of this picturesque region.The interaction took place in the serene and beautiful landscape of Butapathri, surrounded by the majestic mountains and lush greenery of Gulmarg. The event brought together writers, poets, and cultural enthusiasts from the KWA its prominent heads, including the President, Vice President, and District Heads, to deliberate upon the vital aspects of tribal life and culture. This thought-provoking event aimed to explore the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the tribal communities in Kashmir and the local tribal community, fostering a sense of mutual respect and understanding. Special Tea and Lassi Session with Tribal People at Botapathri, Gulmarg, Kashmir:
On a delightful summer afternoon in Butapathri, Gulmarg, Kashmir, a special Namkeen tea and lassi session was organized with the tribal community. The session began with the serving of traditional Kashmiri namkeen tea , also known as NOON CHAI, and refreshing lassi. The special tea and lassi session with the tribal people of Butapathri, Gulmarg, was an unforgettable experience. It provided a rare opportunity to immerse in the rich cultural heritage of the tribal community, learning about their traditions, stories, and way of life. The session not only strengthened the bond between the guests and the tribal hosts but also underscored the importance of preserving and celebrating the unique cultural identity of the tribal people The tribal hosts warmly welcomed the guests, sharing the secrets of their unique tea preparation, which includes saffron, cardamom, cinnamon, and crushed almonds. The lassi, a yogurt-based drink, was served in handcrafted clay cups, adding an authentic touch to the experience.As the guests savored the tea and lassi, conversations flowed naturally, and the tribal hosts shared anecdotes about their daily lives, traditions, and customs. The hospitality and warmth of the tribal people were evident, making the guests feel at home.This gathering aimed to foster cultural exchange and understanding, celebrating the unique traditions and stories of the tribal people who have resided in the dholks of Butapathri for generations.The session was held in an open meadow, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of Gulmarg’s mountains and lush greenery. Deep insights from the Dholks of Butapathri:One of the most enchanting parts of the session was to know about the cultural heritage , past history of the tribals. The tribal elders, known for their rich oral traditions, narrated folk stories that have been passed down through generations. These stories, deeply rooted in the culture and history of the tribal community, provided a fascinating glimpse into their way of life.
►One elder recounted the legend of a shepherd who once lived in the dholks of Butapathri. According to the story, the shepherd possessed an extraordinary bond with the local wildlife, particularly the mountain goats. It was believed that he could communicate with the animals and understand their needs. The story highlighted the deep connection between the tribal people and their natural surroundings, emphasizing the importance of harmony with nature.
►Another captivating was about the Festival of the Moon, a traditional celebration that marks the change of seasons. The story described how the tribal community would gather under the full moon, dancing and singing to celebrate the bounty of nature and to honor their ancestors. This festival, rich in rituals and customs, highlighted the strong sense of community and the importance of cultural preservation.
Preservation of Cultural Heritage. One of the central themes of the interaction was the preservation of tribal cultural heritage in the face of modernization and external influences. The KWA members and tribal representatives discussed strategies for documenting and promoting tribal traditions, ensuring they are passed on to future generations. The second important intervention to highlight during the day long interaction was to discuss about the importance of education and empowerment of the tribal community. Discussions centred on improving access to education, promoting literacy, and empowering tribal women and youth through various skill development programs run by the Government . Establishment of seasonal schools by the School Education Department kashmir as one of the great initiatives was also discussed threadbare and some valuable suggestions were recorded in this regard .Environmental Conservation and its care also came under discussion, given the close connection between the tribal community and their natural surroundings. The participants emphasized the need for sustainable practices to protect the pristine environment of Butapathri and its surrounding areas.The day-long interaction between the Kashmir Writers Association Unit Baramulla and the tribal community of Butapathri, Gulmarg, was a resounding success. It not only provided a platform for cultural exchange but also fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation of tribal life and cultural perseverance.
