Eid-e-Milad, also known as Mawlid al-Nabi, is a significant Islamic festival celebrated by Muslims around the world to commemorate the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. This joyous occasion holds great importance in the hearts of Muslims and serves as an opportunity for reflection, prayer and community bonding. The celebration of the Prophet’s birthday has a rich historical background. The tradition of celebrating Eid-e-Milad dates back to the 7th century when the Prophet Muhammad was born in the city of Mecca in present day Saudi Arabia. His birth is believed to have occurred on the 12th day of Rabi’ al-Awwal in the Islamic lunar calendar. This year Eid-e-Milad will be celebrated around the world on 28 Sep 2023. Eid-e-Milad is marked by various celebrations and observances. While the customs and traditions may vary from one region to another, some common practices are prevalent across the Muslim world. On this day, Muslims gather at mosques and homes to offer special prayers, recite verses from the Quran and reflect upon the life and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. These prayers are a way of seeking Allah’s blessings and guidance.

Houses and mosques are often adorned with colourful banners, lights and Islamic calligraphy to create a festive atmosphere. Many people display green flags and banners, as green is believed to be the favourite colour of the Prophet. Eid-e-Milad encourages acts of charity and kindness. Many Muslims take this opportunity to donate to the less fortunate, provide food to the needy, or offer gifts to children and the elderly. A central part of the celebration is the preparation and sharing of delicious meals with family and friends. Special sweets and desserts are often prepared, and it’s customary to invite guests for a feast. Islamic scholars and leaders often deliver lectures and sermons on the life and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad during this time. These talks serve as a source of inspiration and education for the community. In some regions, especially in South Asia, elaborate processions are organised, where people come together to march, sing praises of the Prophet, and share their love and devotion. Eid-e-Milad serves as a unifying force within the Muslim community, bringing people of various backgrounds and traditions together. Regardless of differences in culture or sect, Muslims worldwide celebrate this day with a shared sense of love and respect for their beloved Prophet. The celebration of the Prophet’s birth also offers an opportunity for interfaith dialogue and understanding. It allows non Muslims to learn more about Islam and the life of Prophet Muhammad, fostering greater tolerance and harmony in diverse societies.

Islamic tradition places great emphasis on preserving the original teachings of the Prophet Muhammad without adding or altering them. Critics of Eid-e-Milad argue that the celebration introduces innovations (bid’ah) into the faith, which are discouraged in Islam. They believe that by celebrating the Prophet’s birthday, Muslims may inadvertently deviate from the pure and unaltered teachings of Islam. The way Eid-e-Milad is celebrated varies significantly from one region to another and among different Islamic sects. Some celebrations are modest, involving prayers and religious lectures, while others are more elaborate, including processions, feasts, and other festivities. These differences in practices have led to disagreements among Muslims about the appropriateness of certain customs associated with the celebration. The difference surrounding Eid-e-Milad has sometimes led to division and polarisation within the Muslim community. Those who support the celebration may view those who oppose it as lacking in love and respect for the Prophet, while those who oppose it may perceive those who celebrate it as engaging in non Islamic practices. Some critics argue that the celebration of Eid-e-Milad places excessive emphasis on the Prophet’s birth and may overshadow the more important aspects of his life, teachings, and example. They suggest that Muslims should focus on emulating the Prophet’s character and following his guidance throughout the year rather than dedicating a single day to celebrate his birth. Eid-e-Milad is a celebration that reflects the love and admiration Muslims have for Prophet Muhammad. It is a time for prayer, reflection, unity, and acts of kindness. While differences of opinion exist regarding its observance, the overall goal is to promote love, peace, and understanding within the Muslim community and beyond. As Muslims come together to celebrate the life of their beloved Prophet, Eid-e-Milad serves as a reminder of the importance of his teachings in their lives and the world at large.
