Trehgam is a town located 9 kms to the West of Kupwara, in the lap of Batamarg mountain peak from North West and from South adjoined by village Pazipora having a confluence with Handwara. The word Trehgam finds its roots in Kashmiri word ‘Treh’ meaning thirty, ‘gam’ is village meaning amalgamation of thirty little villages together.
Once a hot bed of militancy with a large number of sympathisers and OGWs, such figures are now Zero. Since the armed militancy in Kashmir has a close relation with the events that emerged from Trehgam, however the consistency to continue with them declined with the mainstreaming of the people living in the area who saw a huge developmental change after a very long period.
The Nationalistic feeling of Trehgam was witnessed on 75th Independence Day celebration at Sumo stand, Trehgam. Like Lalchowk of Srinagar, it was the epicenter of all anti national activities in the area, a place infamous for stone pelting, anti national posters, today reverbarated as Trehgam, a Patriot’s Paradise . Around 2000 people gathered for the celebration of Independence Day which included gathering from small children to elderly people. The day was celebrated with a huge variety of cultural programs with Patriotic songs and dance by the children.The event started with speech by public administrators followed by cultural programs. The people of Trehgam enjoyed the cultural program and rejoiced the patriotic feeling. It was reassuring to see the crowd enjoying patriotic songs and beholding the sense of nationalism.
During the celebration, a senior citizen conveyed that “In the history of Trehgam Town, this was the first time the National flag was hoisted at Trehgam Sumo stand which gave a patriotic message to the people to live with peace and harmony”
At the end there was a speech by Town Commander followed by certificate and prize distribution to the children who participated in the celebration. The public administrative department thanked Commander of Hajipir Bde, CO of 41 RR and Indian Army for conduct of successful 75 th Independence day celebration.
