The LG appealed people to install smart meters “and help the administration in controlling theft and reducing wasteful consumption” saying the move will “enable consumers to monitor their power consumption behavior and regulate it accordingly”.
Srinagar, Mar 21: Jammu and Kashmir government buys Rs 6000 crore worth of electricity annually, but earns revenue of only Rs 2600 thereby incurring a loss of Rs 3400 crore, LG Manoj Sinha said on Monday.
“Power theft and losses due to the T&D (Transmission and Distribution) are very high. We buy power worth Rs 6000 Cr annually, get only Rs 2600 Cr revenue while our loss figure is Rs 3400 Crore,” news agency KNO quoted LG Sinha saying at a function in Jammu.
Sinha blamed the previous J&K dispensations for failing to address the issue saying “For the last seven decades, no credible efforts were made to increase neither the power capacity nor the transmission & distribution capacity was strengthened”.
He said the J&K administration led by him is “committed to provide quality and uninterrupted power supply to the people who have meters installed in their homes”.
He said the Jammu areas getting electricity from four feeders comprising 6603 houses having smart meters installed will get uninterrupted power supply adding more such meters will be installed in future.
The LG also appealed people to install smart meters “and help the administration in controlling theft and reducing wasteful consumption”. “The move will enable consumers to monitor their power consumption behavior and regulate it accordingly, ” he said.
“The present government, for the last one and half year, is making sustained efforts to ensure reliable power supply to consumers, besides reducing transmission losses and improving distribution efficiency,” the LG further added.
