“Research has been conducted from times immemorial, but your research should be different from that and should necessarily contribute towards the betterment of the society at large,” Prof. Farooq A Shah said while inaugurating the two-week workshop on “Research and Publication Ethics”, organised by the Information Resources Cell and Research and Promotion Cell of the Directorate of Research and Development for scholars of various disciplines. He asked the scholars to conduct their research with utmost sincerity, honesty and truthfulness and refrain from fudging and falsification of the data. “There are already established regulatory mechanisms to check plagiarism and other misconducts, but the real check should come from the inner self,” Prof. Farooq Shah said. He cited examples of several researchers and scientists who stood behind their research, despite being ostracized for the same. CUK VC also underscored the need of choosing novel topics and appropriate methodology for the research, adding that the results of the study should be completely based on the logic and scientific analysis of the data. He further said that experts from within and outside the university would deliver lectures on different topics concerning the workshop theme and asked the participants to make the session more interactive.

Speaking on the occasion, Registrar, Prof. M Afzal Zargar, said the research is an important component of gaining, creating and sharing knowledge in the universities. He said the transparency and honesty in the data collection is the bedrock and cornerstone of any research and asked the scholars to follow the research ethics in letter and spirit. Prof. Zargar said the scholars should take the subjects into confidence and should ensure their confidentiality after getting the required data. Prof. Zargar said that this was the second workshop conducted by the DRD for upgrading the knowledge of the scholars admitted in respective subjects recently.

Addressing the gathering, Director, Internal Quality Assurance Cell, Prof. Wali Muhammad Shah, congratulated the DRD for holding regular workshops for sensitising the scholars on different aspects of research. He said the ethics and morality in an individual gets inculcated primarily from the home then school and college and asked the participants to be honest in their research. Prof. Shah also underscored the need of conducting collaborative research.

Addressing the scholars, Finance Officer, Prof. Fayaz A Nikka, said the basic purpose of the research is to uncover and unravel the hidden and latent realities of nature and subsequently utilize them for the benefit and welfare of the people, cutting across the man-made boundaries. “The scholars should undertake research on new topics in order to come up with fresh research outcomes,” he said. Prof. Nikka asked the participants to clear their doubts if any during interactions with the experts in the workshop.

Asst Librarian, Dr. Tariq Ahmad conducted the programme proceedings while as Assistant Professor Management Studies, Ms Insha Farooq proposed the vote of thanks.
